Dr. Larry Lamb’s Legacy in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA

“Every community deserves not just veterinary care—but veterinary care that feels like home.”

This guiding belief was the heart of Dr. Larry Lamb’s vision when he founded Manchester Animal Hospital, a place where pets could be treated with the same care and respect we’d want for our own loved ones.

Dr. Lamb's Story

Dr. Lamb’s story is one of passion, adventure, and lifelong commitment to animals and their people. A graduate of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine at just 23 years old, Dr. Lamb’s career was anything but conventional. He began his journey with a commission in the United States Air Force, where he designed and ran the veterinary clinic at the Security Base in San Vito de Normanni, Italy. His service took him around the world—to Naples, North Africa, India, and beyond—blending veterinary care with military public health service and international exploration.

After his time abroad, Dr. Lamb held leadership roles in New York City veterinary hospitals and pursued post-graduate study at the renowned Animal Medical Center. But his true spirit of adventure led him on a bold expedition across the Sahara Desert into the heart of Africa, a journey that deeply shaped his understanding of wildlife, community, and connection.

Eventually, Dr. Lamb and his wife and professional partner, Jacqueline, returned to the U.S. to build and lead several veterinary hospitals throughout Vermont before finally planting roots here on the coast of Massachusetts. Manchester-by-the-Sea held special meaning for them—it was Jacqueline’s childhood home, and the perfect place to realize their dream of practicing thoughtful, ethical, and community-focused veterinary medicine.

A Practice Built on Purpose

Manchester Animal Hospital was founded with a clear mission: to bring state-of-the-art care to a small-town setting, while never losing sight of compassion, camaraderie, and client trust. Under Dr. Lamb’s leadership, the hospital became a trusted staple in the community; a place where pet parents felt heard, respected, and truly cared for.

Dr. Lamb wasn’t just a talented veterinarian; he was a dedicated mentor, an advocate for ethical practice, and a tireless contributor to the field. He served as President of the Veterinary Association of the North Shore for multiple terms, co-authored veterinary anesthesia research, and helped edit the foundational textbook Veterinary Ethics. His work helped shape not only the care offered at our hospital, but also the standards of the profession as a whole.
